People have always come to Byron Bay, which is located in New South Whales, Australia on the east coast of the continent. The aboriginal people called Byron Bay “Walgun” which means “The Shoulder”. Even when the Aboriginal people of Byron Bay were inhabiting the location as far back as 22,000 years ago they fell in love with many of the same things modern visitors to Byron Bay fall in love with today such as the location’s breathtaking views, sheltered and sandy beaches, fresh seafood, wildlife, rainforest fruits, and the clean spring water.
In May 1770 a man named Captain Cook sailed past the location and named it Cape Byron as a tribute to Admiral John Byron who was the grandfather of the famous and timeless writer Lord Byron. Located north of Sydney and south of Brisbane, Byron Bay was known as a working man’s town for most of its history. Since the factories have been closed however, Byron Bay has become nothing less than a playground for all kinds of people from all socio-economic backgrounds and walks of life.
Some may find it ironic that Byron Bay’s amazing panoramic views and renowned lax culture could not even be possible if it weren’t for the ancient Tweed Volcano’s massive and violent eruption nearly 22 million years ago, which effectively created the landscape of today’s Byron Bay. Yet, it is this ancient eruption that created the several beautiful beaches that are caressed by unparalleled surf, the magnificent scenery, the array of wildlife, and the famous whale watching industry that now draws so many domestic and international tourists and backpackers.
